The enamel is the teeth’s outer layer that protects from damage and tooth decay. However, your kids’ baby teeth are softer than adults’ permanent teeth. To achieve stronger teeth in kids, we identified some of the ways to help keep your kids’ tooth enamel strong and healthy.

Regular toothbrushing, as you know, is vital to one’s dental health. By brushing your child’s teeth twice daily, you are setting up your child for a lifetime of good dental habits. But, remember to clean them properly. Avoid too much brushing or hard brushing as we call it, as it can wear down your child’s tooth enamel. Let your child use a toothbrush that has softer bristles and help them brush gently. And while brushing, consider using a fluoridated toothpaste for your child. Fluoride, when used in appropriate amounts, can make your child’s teeth stronger and more resistant to decay. Fluoride serves as a shield from harmful acids that cause cavities and decay in children’s teeth.

Another thing that parents also need to know is to be mindful of your kids’ food and drink intake. Watch your child’s diet and limit sugary foods and drinks. Sugars cause cavity-causing bacteria in your child’s mouth. Sugars turn into an acid, which damages the tooth enamel. Sweet treats like candies, cakes, and carbonated soda wear the tooth enamel down. When this barrier gets removed, the teeth will now be prone to cavities and tooth decay. Plus, these unhealthy sugary foods and drinks are generally bad for kids. Instead, give your kids foods that further protect their tooth enamel. Foods high in calcium, such as milk, cheese, and other dairy products, strengthen the teeth. It also makes the bones stronger.

Encourage your child to drink water often. Aside from its health benefits, water helps make your child’s mouth clean and moist. Water also aids in saliva production, which in turn rinses away food debris, acids, and decay-causing bacteria. When your child is thirsty, give them water. Water is the best way to hydrate the body too.

Aside from a healthy dental routine at home, make it a point to bring your child to his or her pediatric dentist regularly. Done every six months, your child’s dentist examines your child’s teeth, cleans it, and evaluates his or her overall dental development. A pediatric dentist has the expertise and experience in looking for possible dental issues that your child may have and can address them appropriately early on. The dentist can also recommend suitable dental treatment that your child may need to further care and strengthen the teeth.

Proper dental hygiene and oral care are imperative if you want your child to have strong and healthy teeth and gums. Come to think of it, dental care starts at birth.
